Departmental Adjustments
UK Home students can apply for the Disabled Students Allowance (DSA) which is a non means tested allowance that enables the student to have support while in Higher Education. This can be non medical support (human support) for study related work (not Personal Care), it may also include equipment (assistive technology for example) and/or other smaller general allowances. This DSA funded support is not available to EU/International students, and it cannot be used to fund adjustments that the University is required to make to ensure access for disabled students, such as the provision of accessible learning materials etc.
When EU/International students present with a disability, the Student Disability Advice (SDA) team in Student Services will assess the student’s likely needs/entitlements and make an application to the Disability Support Fund for costs. These costs might include non medical help support (not personal care), or equipment. However, as the University has some Assistive Technology provision, the existing loan process will be explored in the first instance. For example, a laptop with assistive software.
When departments need to make adjustments to course materials, wish
to provide accessible furniture or meet any other reasonable adjustments,
dependant on the student’s individual assessed needs/entitlements, they should
make an application for costs to the Disability Support Funds. Please contact
the Student Disability Advice team for further advice.
