Frequently Asked Questions
- I have a disability/specific learning difficulty; do I have to tell my academic department?
No you do not have to disclose, however we would strongly recommend that you do. It means that the department will know what your support needs are and how they can support you. By not telling your department it does mean that this will limit the support the University can provide, such as alternative exam arrangements, making sure lecture venues are accessible etc…
- I used to get extra time in my exams; will this carry on at University?
Alternative exam arrangements such as extra time, a scribe and the use of a computer can be put in place. You will need to book an appointment with a disability adviser to discuss your arrangements, and we will need you to bring a copy of your supporting evidence, either an educational psychologists report or medical evidence. Exam arrangements are then recommended on a standard form and need to be approved by your academic department.
- I have the Disabled Student’s Allowance, how do I access the support?
If you have had your Needs Assessment and have the final confirmation of funding letter from your funding body, then please book in to see a disability adviser. They can run through the support recommended and how you can access it. Student Disability Advice provide access to Study Skills tuition, support worker and note takers where appropriate.
- Will the Disabled Student’s Allowance pay for personal care, such as cleaning and washing etc…?
No, the Disabled Student’s Allowance only pays for study related support. Personal care support needs to be funded either through the Disability Living Allowance, via social services or you will need to self fund this support.
- I have a disability/specific learning difficulty; how do I get the support I need?
If you have a disability or specific learning difficulty and are a UK student, then you might be eligible for the Disabled Student’s Allowance. This fund pays for additional study related support at University. Please see our pages on Accessing Support or book in to speak to a disability adviser.
If you are an international/EU student please see our web page for International students or book in to speak to a disability adviser.
- I need an extension for a piece of work due to my disability/specific learning difficulty.
You need to speak to your department, giving them as much notice as possible, explaining the situation. They may request some supporting evidence, if they don’t already hold it. They will then make a decision about whether or not they can offer an extension.
- I am thinking of applying to Bath and I have a disability, what do I need to do?
Student Disability Advice would advise that you contact us and arrange to visit or to have a phone appointment with a disability adviser. We can advise you on support and how to obtain it. We can also help liaise with your academic department where necessary. We would also encourage that you disclose your disability when applying as this will enable the University to support you. If you have specific access needs, we would recommend that you come and have a look around the campus in advance of your application to see how you find the physical access.
- I have a disability and want to live on campus, is this possible?
If you have a disability and need to live on campus then please make contact with the Accommodation Service. They will be able to offer you accommodation and to show you what is available. If you have specific adjustments which need to be made to your accommodation, please make sure you let the Accommodation Service know as early as possible.
