Economics society work with local schools to teach finance to pupils
14 March 2013
The
Bath Economics Society (Team BEST) has recently been
working with local schools on a project to teach pupils about key concepts in economics and
finance.
Led by University of Bath student Becky Heywood (Team BEST Vice-Chair) the society has visited many local schools to deliver interactive sessions, based on a range of topics both on and off the A-Level syllabus.
In November the society visited Sheldon School, where they gave several lessons involving students in running games based on critical economic concepts, such as the Prisoner’s Dilemma.
In February a day was spent delivering classes at Wellsway School that helped pupils discover a range of topics from globalisation to market failure.
The Team also visited Millfield School where they presented an interactive lecture on the on-going debate between two famous economists: Keynes and Hayek.
Jonathan Andrews, a teacher at the school, commented: “I would like to say a huge thanks to you and your team for your efforts… the pupils really enjoyed the event and I have had some excellent discussion in lesson”.
The Schools Project not only provides interactive lessons and lectures for pupils, but it also delivers an insight to pupils as to what life is like studying at university.
The Team BEST Committee 2012/13 would like to thank the schools that have taken part as well as the volunteers from the society who gave up their time to plan and give the lessons.
