A memorable evening was held on 23 May in London by the Department of Economics to thank all the organisations that have supported placement year students recently.

Held at the stunning Skyline Suite & Roof Terrace of the Grange Hotel St Pauls, 138 placement providers attended the event alongside current placement students, placement providers, alumni and academic staff.

The event was organised by the Placement Team at the University of Bath and was attended by Kirsten Brown (Placement Officer) and Clare Wilson (Placements Manager).

Professor Christos Ioannidis, Head of Department spoke warmly to the numerous companies that employ students for their placement year, and how far their guidance and opportunities enhance the student experience.

“I am really grateful to the recruiters who are able to identify and reward these young people…f or these young people it means a lot. When on placement they enter adulthood, and when they come back to us, they are professionals.”

Professor Ioannidis also commented; “we have created a symbiotic relationship between the academic work and the marketplace, and we are all very proud of this. 91 per cent of our students who come back from embarking on a year in industry are employed within the first year of graduation.”

Sachin Mohindra, Vice-president of European Settlements at Goldman Sachs was invited to share his experience of being a line manager to placement students. He highlighted many of the benefits of being on placement, and explained how far students at Goldman Sachs are given real responsibilities and that they are encouraged to come up with ideas and challenge the status quo.

Wonderful feedback was received from those attending the event, and it is hoped that this will become an annual occasion.
