PROFILE

Dr Dawson joined the department in September 2000. He graduated with a first class honours degree from the University of Bradford in 1995 and a PhD from the University of Hull in 2001. Dr Dawson specialises in the areas of microeconometrics and the economics of sport and culture. Projects he is currently working on include: the impact of major sporting events, the relationship between TV viewing, the media and participation in sport and the strategic behaviour of sports stars. He is also working with Professor Phil Jones on various aspects relating to the decision-making process of electoral turnout and with Thanos Mergoupis on the impact of student placements on degree performance and labour market outcomes.

Dr Dawson is a lecturer on the undergraduate degree programme, with responsibilities for Introduction to Econometrics: Cross-Section (Level 2), Economics of Sport (level 3). At the postgraduate level he is responsible for Econometrics: Cross-Section and Panel Data, which analyses cross-sectional and panel data techniques as applied to survey data (microeconometric applications). In 2004 and, recently, in 2006 he was nominated for the University of Bath Innovation in Learning and Teaching Award. In 2005-2006 he was Director of Studies on the MRes Economics and Conversion year in Economics programmes and in 2006 – 2007 was Director of Studies on the MSc Economics and Economics (Development) programmes. He currently holds the post of Head of Postgraduate Teaching.

In addition to full-time teaching and administration responsibilities, he is involved in supervising undergraduate and MSc dissertations and MPhil/PhD students. He is a member of the Royal Economic Society and the International Association of Sports Economists. 

OVERALL RESEARCH INTERESTS
 

Demand functions. Sporting production functions. Models of sporting leagues (cartel arrangements, revenue sharing and institutional rules) and the utility framework of owners. Managerial and player labour markets.  Crime and punishment in sport.  The economic impact of sporting events.
 

Evaluation of microfinance programs: difference-in-difference estimators and propensity score matching.
Decision making and student performance in higher education
Electoral turnout decision making
 

Parametric versus non-parametric techniques. Technical and allocative efficiency techniques. Temporal structure of efficiency. Empirical applications of efficiency.
