Specific University of Bath funding opportunities - Research Postgraduate
ESRC Postgraduate Research Scholarships - note deadlines (See also Graduate School Scholarships)
- ESRC Postgraduate Research Scholarships are available for candidates with an excellent honours degree who are interested in research within the Department of Economics.
We have an ESRC-recognised MRes degree that acts as a foundation for doctoral studies - MRes Economics. Students without recognised training in research skills would be required to pursue an MRes before commencing the PhD – such students may apply for the 1+3 ESRC funding.
Alternatively, students with appropriate research training may be able to apply for the +3 funding to go straight onto the PhD programme. Funding may be available in three ways:
- Nomination (Quota) Studentships (1+3 or +3) – the Department has Quota awards for UK or EU students available in development economics for October 2010. In line with our active research profile, applications are particularly welcome in the following areas: wellbeing and poverty, conflict, corruption and incentives; natural resource management; and aid effectiveness. The closing date for applications is Monday 1 March 2010.
For further discussion contact John Hudson Director of Postgraduate Research in Economics, j.r.hudson@bath.ac.uk or the Research Postgraduate Administrator: economics-research@bath.ac.uk
Please note too that there are also awards in development studies in the Department of Social & Policy Sciences. Please contact: s.c.white@bath.ac.uk.
- Proposal (Open) Studentship Competition (1+3 / +3) – Applicants should have a first class degree. We will provide candidates with the necessary support for completing the ESRC application form. The closing date for applications is Monday 1 March, 2010. For further information please contact the Research Postgraduate Administrator, email: economics-research@bath.ac.uk, Tel. +44 (0)1225 383142
NOTE (regarding 1. and 2.): Applicants should complete the University's application form indicating that they wish to be considered as a candidate for an ESRC scholarship. We will inform applicants whether they have been selected within two weeks, after which we will provide candidates with the necessary support and information for completing the online ESRC application form. It is important to note that general applications remain open for MRes or PhD throughout this period. In all cases, please also notify the contact person indicated below.
- Collaborative (CASE) Research Awards - these are awards for research students to carry out projects in the social sciences in collaboration with companies/business. They provide PhD students with the opportunity to gain experience of work outside an academic environment. An academic supervisor and a company supervisor support students. They are usually known as CASE (Collaborative Awards in Science and Engineering). Application deadlines (from the academic supervisor) is usually the end of January each year. The closing date for proposals to be submitted from institutions is in November each year.
- ESRC occasionally introduce various other funding schemes and so it is always worth checking their website for new schemes - see Postgraduate Training, with the link to Postgraduate Funding Opportunities. For example:
- the ESRC, jointly with other Research Councils, has established various interdisciplinary studentships – such as the ESRC/NERC Interdisciplinary Research Studentships which encouraged postgraduate research on environmental issues which were of interest to both Councils and which required the combined approaches of both the environmental and social sciences.) The subject matter of such studentships must obviously address the interests of both councils.
- In the light of Council's increased commitment to international research, the Training Board has developed a new strategy to 'internationalise' postgraduate training. As part of this funding may be available for an extra 3 months paid extension to all ESRC funded research award holders to undertake an overseas institutional visit to undertake specialist research training or develop collaborative links.
See ECRC Guidance for Applicants, especially Section 2, 'Who can apply?' and Section 4 'Studentship Financial Information' (Award includes standard fees and maintainance grant).
