Initial Teacher Education

PGCE (Masters and Honours level)

The one year PGCE is the most common route for graduates into teaching. The Department offers both the Postgraduate Certificate in Education and the Professional Graduate Certificate in Education. The former include M level credit which can be used towards an MA in Education and the latter is awarded at H (Honours) level. Successful applicants will be asked to opt for the programme they wish to follow during the first week of the course.

The Department runs Secondary and Middle Years courses. Both run for 36 weeks from early September to the end of June. 24 of the 36 weeks are spent in school working with teachers and children.

The PGCE course award and recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) are assessed by tutors from the University and the Professional Tutors and Subject Mentors based in the Partnership schools.

The University has an active equal opportunities policy and applications are particularly welcome from graduates from minority ethnic backgrounds and those with disabilities.

GTP (Graduate Teacher Programme)

As a consequence of University restructuring, a decision has been taken by the University not to continue with the Graduate Teacher Programme from September 2011.
Therefore we will no longer be accepting applications for the GTP course. Please consult the TDA website for other providers.
The University's commitment to the PGCE remains as strong as ever.

Please note that the University of Bath does not offer the GTP, the OTTP (Overseas Trained Teacher Programme) or Primary PGCE courses.
