Research Programmes
Research within the Department occurs across four formally recognised research programmes:
- Educational policy, globalisation and organisation led by Professor Hugh Lauder
- Learning as cultural and social practice led by Professor Harry Daniels
- Education and sustainability led by Dr Stephen Gough
- Sport, Physical Activity & Culture led by Dr Michael Silk
The department also retains a broad base of research interest, and a commitment to rigour, social relevance and originality across its spectrum of activities. Since 2001, there has been an increasingly philosophical focus to key aspects of our work, and the development of research in the following areas: early childhood, education and poverty reduction, sports coaching, and educational relationships, alongside continuing concerns with curricular issues (in both national and international contexts), and teachers’ professional development.
