Project summary

According to the European Commission, recent developments in the area of Open Education suggest a need to develop economies of scale and remove barriers to access, use and sharing of knowledge across borders for education, if Europe is to remain competitive globally.

Against this backdrop, the Opencases project aims to generate an overview of the current institutional engagement in Open Education through the analysis of different dimensions of openness (e.g. content, courses, pedagogy, curricula, research, technology, leadership, access, recognition of learning outcomes) instantiated in institutional practices in European postsecondary institutions.

The project, which will be undertaken during 2015, is based on a review of the literature and a series of 7 case studies -that will include the analysis of documents, observations, web and social media analysis and in-depth interviews- on institutional engagement in Open Education through the analysis of different dimensions of openness.

The project is part of the OpenEdu project, whose final aim is to support the Directorate General of Education and Culture of the European Commission in the design of effective policies to Open up Education.  The Opening up Education initiative of the European Commission sets out a European agenda for stimulating high-quality, innovative ways of learning and teaching through new technologies and digital content. It aims to stimulate the use of ICT and digital content in learning and teaching, mainly through the development and availability of Open Educational Resources (OER) and open learning environments.
