Development of teaching practices in nursing education through 'practice-developing research'

Research Team: Seth Chaiklin with Anne Sievert (University College Sjælland)
Funder: University College Sealand
Date of completion: Ongoing

Summary

Practice-developing research is oriented generally to the investigation and development of professional practices through theoretically-formed development projects that aim at developing better methods for conducting a practice, together with developing institutional conditions that can maintain new developments.

This general idea is being pursued in the present project, which is focused on the development of teaching practice in nursing education. In the initial phase of the project, there was a general interest in formulating principled grounds for selecting content to specific modules and units in the education, with a focus on giving better possibilities for students to develop competences directed toward future professional practice. The first specific project was to select content for the unit ‘theory of science and research methodology’. As part of that work, an initial general model of nursing practice was developed.

This model was then used as part of investigation of how to select subject-matter content for an integrated module on 'nursing, ethics, and knowledge-based activities. Current work is focused on introducing the core ideas to many of the teachers in the nursing college to give a platform for further transformations in how teaching in planned.

This project is conducted within the Practice Laboratory.
