Classes for native speakers of English
We offer two units designed to support and improve your academic writing and speaking skills if:
- English is your first language
- you have IELTS 8.5/TOEFL 115 or above
- all of your previous education was in English.
Units
Assessments
Both units have three coursework assessments taken in class. There is no final exam.
Credits
Each unit is three extra credits. To have the extra credits on your final transcript, all three assessments must be taken.
Duration
Each class is 1.5 hours per week.
Academic writing for native speakers of English
Aims and content
The aim of this unit is to develop your general academic writing skills, particularly essay writing.
Both undergraduates and postgraduates can sign up for this unit.
The unit covers the following:
- surveying a book or article
- note-taking and summarising skills
- synthesising/Incorporating source material and avoiding plagiarism
- referring to sources
- essay structure
- paragraph structure
- planning an essay
- writing introductions and conclusions
- cohesive devices
- academic style – showing and avoiding personal commitment
- grammatical accuracy and punctuation
- writing in examinations.

Classes are timetabled to run on:
- Monday evenings 6.15pm-7.45pm
- Tuesday 11.15am-12.45pm
- Wednesday afternoons 2.15pm-3.45pm or 3.45pm-5.15pm.
If you are not available to attend at these times, please state when you are available in the comments box on the on-line application, as it may be possible to open new class times if there is enough interest.
How to apply
Applications are online.
You can apply for semester 1 from the beginning of October. You can apply for semester 2 from the end of December.
Presentations
Aims and content
The aim of this unit is to help you improve your formal presentation skills in English. It includes bothindividual and group presentation practice. A small amount of preparation is required at home for some classes.
The course covers the following Presentation skills:
- preparation
- planning and structuring the presentation
- the stages of a presentation
- visual aids
- delivery(including intonation, body language etc)
