About the English Language Centre
Mission
The mission of the English Language Centre is to be a first class resource for the delivery of English language teaching for the University.
Core roles
The ELC’s core roles are:
- to provide support teaching in English for Academic purposes (EAP) to the University’s international undergraduate and postgraduate students to enable them to complete their academic studies.
- to provide on request by the University’s departments language training programmes targeting specific needs.
- to provide staff and students in all departments with advice and guidance in all matters relating to the testing of English language proficiency.
Non core roles:
The ELC’s non core roles are:
- to develop and deliver EAP programmes to provide an income stream for the University.
- to develop and deliver EFL programmes to contribute to the income stream of the University.
- to deliver in partnership with departments degree and non degree programmes related to the English language and English language teaching.
- to develop teaching and testing extension activities which contribute to the income stream of the University.
- to work with the International Office to develop new markets.
In order to fulfil its mission and ensure a consistently high performance in all its roles the ELC
- has an organisational strategy which is reviewed annually
- a staff development policy and a supporting programme
- has achieved BALEAP accreditation for all its EAP programmes
- maintains a modern Self Access Language Centre (SALC) for its students and staff
