Teacher training
We deliver the Cambridge English Delta (Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages).
We also provide tailor-made teacher training courses. Please email us to discuss your needs.
Delta overview
Delta is a widely recognised in-service training course aimed at practising teachers who wish to upgrade their qualifications and develop their teaching skills.
It is a very demanding and challenging course, with each module consisting of approximately 200 study hours. It requires a high level of commitment. However, it is also very rewarding in terms of teacher development and enhancement of career opportunities within the English Language Teaching profession.
Course structure
Delta is a modular course, divided as follows:
- Module One: Understanding Language Methodology and Resources for Teaching
- Module Two: Developing Professional Practice
- Module Three: Extending Practice and English Language Teaching Specialism.
We deliver all three modules as an integrated part-time course. Classes take place on Tuesdays and observation of your teaching is normally done with your own classes in the school where you are working.
You will find full details of the course, the syllabus and handbook, and example materials on the Cambridge English website.
Assessment
A certificate is awarded for each module passed. A candidate who achieves a pass in all three modules can apply for a full Delta certificate.
- Module One is assessed via a written examination
- Module Two is assessed via a portfolio of coursework, including observed lessons, background written assignments, and an externally-assessed lesson observation
- Module Three is assessed via an extended written assignment.
Assessment takes place in June and December each year. You can choose to take all of the modules at the same time, or take them separately.
Entry requirements
To be accepted onto the Delta you should be a practising English language teacher and you will normally have:
- an initial teaching qualification enabling you to teach English in your own context
- a range of experience of teaching different levels, preferably in a variety of contexts
- a very high level of competence in both spoken and written English (a minimum IELTS score of 8 in each component is required if English is not your first language)
- a good academic background (first degree or equivalent) and the ability to research and present written work to the required standard.
How to apply
Before applying, please contact the Delta Course Director by telephone on +44 (0)1225 383139 or by email to check availability.
Tasks
You will need to complete the following three tasks and send them to us by email:
- A copy of a recent lesson plan
This should include clear information about the target group or level or context, a statement of your aims, and a detailed account of your procedures. Please attach copies of any materials used.
- Discussion tasks (about 500 words in total)
Outline briefly one language teaching problem and one classroom management problem you have encountered and describe the steps you took to overcome them.
- A short essay (about 500 words)
Describe how your approach to ELT has developed during your career, with specific reference to teaching situations you have been in. In what ways do you believe the Delta will further this development?
Application form
You will also need to submit a completed application form containing the names of two referees, one of whom should be familiar with your teaching.
Once we have received both the tasks and the completed application form, we will arrange an interview, either face-to-face or by telephone.
