Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs) allow businesses to use our department's experience and expertise to:
- Develop new products
- Improve performance
- Expand
KTPs are partially government-funded. Most of our partners are small to medium-sized companies, although we also work with larger organisations.

How do KTPs work?
One of our graduates or employees – a KTP associate – will be seconded to you for at least two years. They will work full-time on your project.
Your associate will also attend residential courses run by the government’s KTP Office. They will learn training, management and business skills and have the chance to earn a management diploma.
Success stories
We worked with Navtech Radar to design a low-cost radar sensor for security applications. The partnership was named Best KTP Building on Engineering and Physical Research Council-Funded Research at the 2010 KTP Awards.
We also won a funding award of more than £185,000 to help Sonic Systems Ltd break into new markets.
