PhD student shortlisted for EPSRC ICT Pioneers award
Kent Wei, a third-year PhD student at the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering has been shortlisted for the 2012 UK ICT Pioneers competition under the category 'Transforming Society'.
UK ICT Pioneers is a partnership between the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and industry. The award recognises and awards exceptional UK PhD students in ICT-related topics who are able to communicate and demonstrate the excellence and exploitation potential of their research.
Kent's research project explores the potential of a non-invasive electromagnetic imaging technology to be used in various challenging applications. The technique is called Magnetic Induction Tomography (MIT), and its high speed and low cost features make it suitable to be applied into both industrial and medical applications.
Dr Manuchehr Soleimani, Kent’s supervisor said: “This is a major achievement by one of our PhD students in the Department of Electronic and Electric Engineering and it highlights the quality of the research done in the University. I am excited to attend the final event with Kent.”
The competition is open to all second and third year UK postgraduate research students in ICT-related subjects including electronics, communications, computer science, and human-computer interfaces and photonics.
Kent said: ”I am very honoured to be shortisted in this competition. I want to thank EPSRC for recognising the value of my research. This will really encourage me in my future research and I hope that this will also encourage other researchers in similar research fields.”
The awards ceremony will take place on Wednesday 28 November 2012, where category winners will participate in a Dragon’s Den style competition before a panel of judges.
