IMEE first-year student wins Team GB's first gold

Kristian Callaghan wins gold medal for Team GBRising sports star Kristian Callaghan, a first-year MEng Integrated Mechanical and Electrical Engineering student, won Great Britain's first gold medal in the men’s 25 metre rapid fire pistol event in the Australian Youth Olympic Festival (AYOF) in January.

Kristian was part of a team of 10 shooters, but he was the only male GB pistol representative in each of his three events.

Kristian said: “It was brilliant when I found out that I was the first member of Team GB to win gold at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival. That was only my second-ever rapid pistol final so to go into a shoot out was really tense. I couldn’t be happier.”

Kristian Callaghan shootingThe Australian Youth Olympic Festival is a legacy of the 2000 Olympic Games held in Sydney and is in now in its sixth year. This was the third time that Great Britain participated.

Kristian has represented Great Britain and England in shooting many times. During Freshers’ Week, he won gold medals in each of his six events in the Commonwealth Shooting Federation: European Division Championships (CSF:ED).

Later in 2013, Kristian will be competing in two European Championships in Odense, Denmark, and Osijek, Croatia, the World University Games, and several other international competitions.

At the Department of Electric and Electronic Enginering we look forward to hearing about his future successes.
