PhD supervision

Interested in supervising students studying:

  • Radiowave propagation through random media
  • GPS receivers and signals
  • Space weather
  • Radio astronomy

Dr Biagio Forte

Dr Biagio Forte graduated in Physics at the University of Trieste (Italy) and went on to complete a PhD in Geo-Physics at the Karl-Franzens University of Graz (Austria).

Biagio joined the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering in 2012 as a Prize Fellow in Space Weather.  Biagio's fellowship aims at devising countermeasures to mitigate space weather vulnerabilities affecting satellite navigation, for example, in support to civil aviation.

 Research interests include:

  • Physics and chemistry of the upper ionised atmosphere
  • Plasma turbulence and instabilities in magnetized plasmas
  • Propagation of electromagnetic waves in random media, transionospheric radio waves propagation
  • Radio wave scintillation (ionospheric and interplanetary), fading processes
  • RF engineering, GNSS receiver architecture, phase-locked loops, signal modulation and demodulation techniques
  • Space weather phenomena and their effects on satellite navigation and telecommunication systems
  • Remote sensing of atmospheres in the microwave, millimetre, sub-millimetre, visible, and infrared parts of the spectrum
  • Space missions and space instrumentation
  • Radio occultation
  • Remote sensing of the Earth’s troposphere by means of LIDARs
  • Incoherent scatter radars
  • Low frequency radio astronomy.
