Dr Ignacio Hernando Gil

BEng, MSc, PhD, MEI, MIEEE

Profile

Ignacio was appointed Prize Fellow in the Department in 2016. His role includes teaching and the supervision of under/postgraduate students, securing research funding via grant bids, developing international research links and taking part in public engagement. He has extensive experience managing laboratory-based "smart grid" and renewable energy projects.

Research

 Ignacio’s research interests lie in the field of power systems reliability, modelling and analysis of active distribution networks, and the aggregate impact of smart grid technologies on the quality of power supply. He was awarded with the ‘Basil Papadias’ best paper prize in IEEE PowerTech Conference 2011, and with the ‘IEEE-PES UKRI Chapter’ best presentation award in the 3rd Durham Risk Day 2012.

 Research Areas include Optimal Security of Supply in Future Electricity Networks (operation and planning), Integration of Distributed Low-Carbon Technologies (wind, photovoltaics, electric vehicles, storage, demand side response),  Local Hybrid AC/DC Networks - Advanced Energy (Storage) Management System, Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) Hardware-in-the-Loop Studies
