Dr Robert Watson

BEng, PhD

Dr Watson studied for a BEng and PhD degrees at the University of Essex in 1992 and 1996 respectively. He joined the University of Bath's academic staff in 1998.

Dr Watson’s research interests are mainly in area of radio science applied to the propagation of radio signals and remote sensing.

He is interested in the following topics:

  • Atmospheric radar (weather radars) and radiometer technology
  • Active and passive remote sensing techniques (e.g., signals of opportunity for atmospheric science)
  • Radio propagation modelling and prediction 1-100GHz (e.g., parabolic equation modelling, attenuation in rain and cloud)
  • Passive radar (collaboration with University of Adelaide)
  • Bistatic and multistatic netted radar (collaboration with Navtech Radar)
  • Global Navigation Satellite System technology (e.g., GAARDIAN, SENTINEL)

Current industrial research collaborators include Chronos Technology, General Lighthouse Authority, e2V, Met Office, Navtech Radar and Ordnance Survey.

Teaching units

  • Digital Communications
  • Group Design and Business Project I
  • Group Design and Business Project II
  • Satellite and Terrestrial Remote Sensing Systems
