Electronic and electrical engineering includes a number of fascinating research challenges. It covers areas such as:

  • Electrical power and energy systems
  • Microelectronics and optoelectronics
  • Biosensors and bioengineering
  • Remote sensing in space and atmospheric applications
  • Imaging and tomography

Our department was rated in the UK’s top ten for research in the latest Research Assessment Exercise. Some 60% of our research activity was classed as world-leading or internationally excellent.

Types of research degree

We offer two types of research degree:

  • Master of Philosophy (MPhil) degree - typically takes two years full-time or four years part-time
  • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree - typically takes three years full-time or five years part-time.
