Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering

Outreach activities

Our academics with Taylors studentsThe Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering aims to inspire young people to study engineering by taking practical engagement activities into schools.

Bath Robotic Challenge

A team led by Dr Pejman Iravani and Dr Manuchehr Soleimani from our Robotics and Autonomous Systems research group recently took their Robotic Challenge to
A level students in Malaysia. During their trip the team visited six schools in and around Kuala Lumpur representing both Electronic and Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering at Bath.

The challenge

It was a wonderful morning that was so well organised and offered a fantastic opportunity for our students to begin to explore the world of robotics and indeed Engineering.

The Alice Smith School, Selangor, Malaysia

The Robotic Challenge involved student teams working to design and programme a racing robot culminating in either a team robot race or robot sumo challenge (download challenge brochure PDF).

Following the robot races, the Bath team decided on the best-performing robot and awarded prizes to the challenge winners.

Learning outcomes

Students learned about robotic sensors, actuators, control and programming, giving them a really good feel for what cross-disciplinary engineering involves, an approach reflected in our Integrated Mechanical and Electrical Engineering programme.

Inspiring future engineers

The Department hopes to expand their outreach activities to inspire high achieving students around the world to study our engineering programmes.
