Profile
Barbara is tutor of the Policy Planning and Regulation unit for the MSc in Integrated Environmental Management (by distance learning).
Barbara has over 25 years’ experience of environmental planning and management from both the private and public sectors. She has a particular expertise in the use of environmental and sustainability assessment techniques (Strategic Environmental Assessment, Sustainability Appraisal, Health & Equalities Impact Assessment, Environmental Impact Assessment, Habitats Regulations Assessment) to inform policy and plan-making.
Her wide experience includes preparation of guidance (e.g. SEA for the Environment Agency), development of methods (e.g. Appraisal of Sustainability & Cumulative Effects Assessment for the UK Department of Energy & Climate Change), and training (e.g. SEA for the Institute of Environmental Management & Assessment).
Barbara has published and presented variously on EA, SA, spatial/land use planning, and sustainable water planning/management; she is the co-author of the EIA Handbook (Telfords 2002).
Barbara is director of the consultancy Enfusion Ltd. She was Chair of CIWEM Council, the Visiting Professor of Sustainable Development at the University of Glasgow, and has served on statutory environmental protection committees for the Environment Agency. She is Chair of the IEMA Environmental Assessment SIG and joined the IEM programme as a tutor in 2012.
