Transient Characterisation of Engine/Turbocharger systems

Start date:  October 2013

  • All applicants welcome
  • Tuition fees
  • Training support fee

Details of project

Automotive engines are required to operate under very dynamic conditions because of the duty cycles they are required to undertake. However, engine development is strongly focused on optimisation for steady state operation where the dynamics of thermal effects are not accounted for.

The relationship between turbocharger and engine are vital to deliver performance and fuel consumption benefits. This project aims to improve modelling approaches to better account for engine/turbocharger interactions under dynamic conditions.

Requirements

  • Self-motivating and enthusiastic individual
  • Solid background in thermodynamics and fluid mechanics.
  • Experience in experimental and/or 1D/3D modelling of engine or turbo machinery desirable.
