MSc Architectural Engineering:
Facade Engineering
This MSc provides the theoretical basis for a sound understanding of all the disciplines involved in the performance of facades. It examines the complex inter-relationships between those different aspects through a consideration of existing constructions. Knowledge of materials, methods of manufacture and installation are considered as essential elements in the successful design of facades and are given a prominent place in the programme.
The programme provides advanced understanding of the different aspects of analysis, design and construction of cladding of buildings. It leads students to re-appraise basic physical concepts so that they may be imaginatively applied to the engineering of building facades.
Graduates are qualified to pursue careers in the design, management, manufacture or construction of facades and as specialists in architectural and engineering practices.
Learning options
The programme is delivered in a modular format based on four day blocks of attendance at the University. There are ten taught units, eight core and two optional, chosen from six options. In addition to completing these taught units, a dissertation must be submitted. The programme is also available as PG Diploma and CPD.
Why Bath?
The programme is based in the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering which has a long history of successful interdisciplinary education for design professionals. It has pioneered the use of design projects in undergraduate teaching by making use of both university based researchers and practicing architects and engineers.
The programme is based on research expertise within the Department and the renowned Centre for Window and Cladding Technology - a national focus for research in the field of Facade Engineering which plays an important part internationally in the dissemination of knowledge.
Further details

See programme catalogue for more detail on individual units.
Programme structure
- Full time study: 12 months
- Part time study: 24-48 months
- The programme is offered as a modular programme comprising 14 units. The MSc programme comprises eight core units, two optional units (from a choice of six) and a dissertation. The PG Diploma covers the same taught elements as the MSc course, but does not require a dissertation to be submitted.
- The taught units are undertaken in ten 4-day blocks. The first introductory unit is mandatory and a pre-requisite to all the subsequent core/optional units which may be selected and undertaken to suit your own work and time commitments. Students on the part time route complete a Unit Booking Form at the beginning of each academic year and may take up to four consecutive years to complete the Programme.
- Each unit comprises preparatory work, four consecutive days' attendance at the University of Bath and /or follow up work afterwards, amounting to 100 hours of study. Students will be assessed during the unit or by work submitted immediately after each unit.
- Where students do not wish, or are ineligible to progress to the dissertation, a Postgraduate Diploma is awarded after successful completion of the taught modules only.
- Each taught unit may be taken for CPD (Continuing Professional Development) purposes by professionals who do not wish to follow the entire programme. CPD units are suitable if you have identified a specific area of environmental design in which you would like to increase your knowledge and skills. The CPD units may also provide the opportunity to transfer to the MSc/PG Dip at a later stage. The assessment is considered to be an integral part of the unit and a certificate will be issued for each successful CPD unit. Certificates will not be issued for attendance only
Compulsory units
- Introduction to facade engineering
- Facade materials and components
- Facade construction
- Structural integrity
- Thermal performance of facades
- Weathertightness
- Glass and glazing
- Facade procurement
Optional units
- Daylight and shading
- Thermal analysis of facades
- Acoustics and fire
- Structural analysis of facades
- Contract management
- Natural ventilation in buildings
Dissertation
During the final three months of the degree you will produce a dissertation. This is your opportunity to explore a particular topic that has been covered during the programme in far greater depth.
