Join our Centre for Doctoral Training in Water Informatics: Science and Engineering (WISE)

Train as a researcher at the interface of hydroinformatics, science and engineering. Develop the skills needed to lead innovation in the water industry.

Why should you apply for WISE?

We're looking for engineers and scientists who want to work towards improving the way we manage water cycles for the benefit of society and the environment.

We created WISE to meet a growing need in the water industry for more interdisciplinary scientists and engineers. Bringing together informatics, science and engineering, we train researchers in new ways to manage water cycles both sustainably and effectively. Our CDT is delivered by the GW4 alliance universities: Bath, Bristol, Cardiff and Exeter.

Being part of a Centre for Doctoral Training gives you the opportunity to build transferable skills to complement your research. You'll have academic support from four partner institutions known for excellence in research, education and scholarships. Our programme also includes:

  • integrated technical training
  • annual week-long summer school
  • opportunities to attend and present at conferences worldwide
  • opportunities to do a three-month placement with companies such as Wessex Water, OSIsoft, Arup or IBM
  • opportunities to take a sabbatical at a leading university such as MIT, EPFT or the National University of Singapore

Programme

We welcome applications from high-calibre students across the spectrum of science and engineering disciplines.

We've worked closely with industrial and international academic partners to develop this four-year, full-time programme. It offers you an advanced PhD experience, designed to help you become the next generation of skilled water scientists and engineers.

Our CDT programme at Bath is closely linked to our Water Innovation and Research Centre: WIRC@Bath. WIRC @ Bath benefits from a strategic partnership with Wessex Water that supports research and postgraduate training in innovation in the water industry.

We offer up to 20 four-year, fully-funded studentships each year. Supervisors at Bath can offer PhD projects in:

  • environmental sustainability
  • water resource management
  • flood risk evaluation
  • hydrology and hydro-power
  • mathematical and computational modelling
  • waste water treatment and recycling
  • water quality, pollution and human health
  • epidemiology of water-borne disease
  • security of supply
  • infrastructure resilience

Key people

  • Dr Tom Arnot, Chemical Engineering, Co-director of the WISE CDT
  • Professor Jonathan Dawes, Mathematical Sciences, Deputy Director of the Bath Institute for Mathematical innovation
  • Professor Jan Hofman, Chemical Engineering, Director of the Water Innovation and Research Centre: WIRC @ Bath
