Deaf Alerter System- Clarion

  • Campus wide system for alerting fire alarms to deaf and people with impaired hearing
  • Extends to on site residences for night time cover
  • Available to staff and students
  • Cover at Carpenter House & Innovation Centre

The University campus has a deaf alerter system, this system is installed for staff, students and visitors who are deaf, or who have impaired hearing. It alerts these individuals with a vibrating pager in the event of a fire alarm being activated. A text message is sent to the pager stating which building is generating a fire alarm on campus. This could be a building that an individual is in, close to or a neighbouring building to ensure people with hearing difficulties are aware of the situation. The pager will not alert to all alarms on campus, only the buildings which the individual is close to or occupying.

The system relies on transmitters connected to individual fire panels in the campus buildings which trigger a text message and cause the pager to vibrate. The system at Bath is a Clarion installation and many individuals may already have a pager which picks up this message from other sites in the UK, and it should be compatible with our signal, but please check.

For staff and students who require this important piece of equipment it will be issued to staff through Marlene Bertrand in Human Resources, or for students through Susannah Doyle in Learning Support. Visitors should contact Marlene Bertrand if they are not being hosted and wish to take up the facility.

Training will be given by the Estates Department on how the pager works and all necessary batteries and equipment is issued free of charge. This equipment remains the property of the University and on ceasing employment with the University, or completing your education, or visit, it is expected that the equipment will be returned to Human Resources or Learning Resources.

For Students, tutors, and visitors in most the campus residences a vibrating pillow is also available to warn people when the fire alarm activates, these are available from Accommodation Services who will also brief residents on their operation. This would usually be in addition to the provision of a pager.

This system represents a substantial investment by the University to ensure that we cater for special needs, and we hope those who could benefit, and be protected by this support, will make use of the facility.

Users may be aware that in the UK there is another service provider called ‘Deaf Alerter’ and this is not directly compatible with Clarion and you will need a Clarion pager for the Bath campus. Training provided will cover what happens when the alarms are tested as part of this process also checks the pager is functioning.

Off Campus the system is provided in Carpenter House and the Innovation Centre.
