What is it?

A pioneering local project to save energy

A Treasury part-funded project with the aim of saving at least 10% of our energy usage in the next 3 years

See www.bigenergychallenge.org for more details

How will it do this?

  • By improving awareness of energy saving through a variety of means (face to face training, web-based training, other publicity, etc)
  • By improving the ability of staff/students to make a difference through better information
  • By providing a network of 'Green Champions' in all key departments/buildings
  • By improving the management of energy use data in the campus by improving our metering network
  • By providing some funding for improvements
  • By providing a local network for sharing ideas

  What has happened so far?

  • 55 Green Champions across all departments recruited, trained and active within their areas
  • Website with on-line training presentation developed
  • Face to face training in some areas
  • Publicity materials developed and produced
  • Regular energy consumption information distributed to departments via Champions
  • £100k+ investment in automated metering equipment

Why do this?

To reduce our carbon footprint, our environmental impact, and our energy bills.

"As a leading institution with an international reputation for teaching and research in the environmental and energy fields, we have to ensure we also seek to practice what we teach. We as Universities should be exemplars of best environmental practice and take our responsibilities to reduce our contribution to climate change seriously. I think that this project, with the support of the staff and students, gives us a real chance to make a difference"

Prof. Jane Millar , Pro Vice Chancellor (Strategic Developments)
