Facts and Figures

Energy and water use

The University spent £4.2 million in 2010/11 on utilities, made up of

  • Electricity - £2,284k
  • Gas - £1,141k
  • Water/sewerage - £789k

For 2011/12 the budget was £6m, and the projection for 2012/13 is £6,416k.

In a year we typically use the figures shown below, from which we generate around 24,000 tonnes CO2 emissions:

  • 27 million kWh electricity (equivalent to 9000 houses)
  • 45 million kWh gas (equivalent to 3000 houses)
  • 320,000 m3 water (equivalent to 4000 houses)

For more information please see below.

Monthly electricity use

Below are a series of spreadsheets for you to view the monthly energy consumptions of the buildings on and off the campus. There are a series of different tabs on each spreadsheet, containing data for various buildings on the campus.

Display Energy Certificates

Welcome to Bath University's dynamic DEC (Display Energy Certificates) campus map. This website allows you to see the energy performance of buildings across the Main Bath University Campus. Just click on the building you are interested in and the link will take you to that building's Display Energy Certificate. Please see here for an explanation of the certificate.

Below are some details about the University's energy usage. For more details, see the Annual Energy Report 2008/09.

In a year, we use

  • 30 million kilowatt-hours of electricity
(equivalent to the use of over 9000 households!)

  • 400 million litres of water
(enough to fill over 500 swimming pools)

  • 5 million cubic metres of gas
    (equivalent to 2500 houses)

... and we are responsible for emitting

  • 20,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO/2)
(enough to fill over 4000 hot air balloons)

Budgeted energy spend 11/12

Utility spend 10/11 by cost centre

Electricity Use

10% down in 5 years

(equivalent to £340k being saved every year)

Gas Use

20% down in 5 years

(equivalent to £440k being saved every year)

Water Consumption

18% down in 5 years

(equivalent to £150k being saved every year)

All achieved while growth in campus, hence well in excess of £1m being saved every year
