The new Applied Biomechanics Suite was completed at the beginning of September and is now occupied by the Department of Sport and Exercise Science. The project commenced in April 2007 and was completed by Cowlin Design and Build within the agreed contract programme. On the ground floor the facilities include a laboratory with forceplates and lifting beam, teaching space and back of house workshop and office. The first floor mezzanine level provides five academic offices, a postgraduate office and a digitising suite. Externally a new main entrance has been created and a new pedestrian link to the main campus has been provided via the Art Lecture Theatre garden.
This project is now complete and the Final Account has been agreed; outturn is on budget. 5 West and 4 East Servery refurbsMuch improved social/IT space has been provided with the refurbishment of former serveries in 5 West and in 4 East to provide informal IT and networking areas.
3 West NorthGeorge & Harding are now proceeding to completion and the external works are currently underway. The anticipated date for final completion is the end of April, but the last few weeks of the project will involve the commissioning of the electrical systems so this will be a quiet time. We appreciate that some of the office users close by, particularly in 1 West North have been inconvenienced by the noise generated by this project and we are grateful for their tolerance. Part of the project includes a new clean room facility for Physics for their Fibre Tower, which was moved from 4 West, and this should be operational from the end of April. During April and into May there will be some activity associated with a new laboratory fit out for the Department of Physics' new PPMG laboratory but this will not be as disruptive as the main building works.
BackgroundThe construction of the new building 3 West North will commence on site at the beginning of June 2004. Certain enabling works to divert services and remove an existing portakabin are already underway. The new building has been designed by the Bath based architects Stubbs Rich. It will provide a total of 890mª of new accommodation together with 150mª of refurbished space for the University. The total project cost is £2.87m and funding is being provided by the Higher Education Funding Council for England through its Project Capital and SRIF capital allocation rounds. The northern zone of the building will provide new and replacement research facilities for the Department of Physics. In particular, it will replace the fibre optic drawing tower and laser laboratories which are currently located in 4 West and which are due to be demolished during the Summer. The southern or learning zone provides a new 200 seat tiered lecture theatre for the University. It will also provide 3 additional GTA spaces with a capacity of 50 seats each. The building is due to complete at the end of April 2005, although key research facilities will be handed over at an earlier date to coincide with the vacation of 4 West. At the same time, a programme of refurbishment of teaching laboratories within the original 3 West building will be carried out. Other members of the construction team are : - BJP Consulting - services engineers It should be noted that due to the limited space available, the main site compound will be located behind the 25m swimming pool, which will necessitate a certain amount of vehicular movement on the northern estate road. The project manager is Martyn Whalley of Northcroft. Martyn can be contacted via the Projects Administrator on 3038 if there are any particular issues that need to be raised with him. Wessex Restaurant (Spring 2007)The Wessex Restaurant has recently undergone refurbishment to create a more stylish environment; both the decor and the furnishings have been upgraded. University Hall (September 2006)The refurbishment of the University Hall was the flagship project for 2006. The energy efficiency of the Hall has been improved and there is better ventilation. New audio visual equipment has been installed with three screens to allow the theatre to operate for all types of teaching, including the playing of films/DVDs on the large 7 x 4m screen, or the two 5 x 4m screens for presentations.
