Waste and Recycling
WASTE
Confidential Waste
Confidential waste is dealt with by the University Archivist's office and information about how to request a confidential waste sack can be found on their web page. Please see their page for definitions of what is classed as confidential waste, please recycle it instead if you can.
Hazardous Waste
Waste regarded as 'hazardous' includes telephones, printers, fax machines, computer screens, and anything else electrical....
For small quantities, contact the Charge Hand Porter for your building (see here for details of each building's porter) or mark the rubbish clearly as 'Hazardous Waste' and leave it near your waste paper bin for collection; your Porter will collect hazardous waste when they have a significant amount for collection.
For large quantities, please email.
For information about how to deal with hazardous waste, please see Health, Safety and Environment's web pages.
Office Clearouts - furniture removal, etc.
If you are moving offices and need help to move your furniture and effects, the first step would be to enter a request for help on the 'green button'. The Department of Estates will process your request to the Charge Hand Porter/Porter for your building to liaise with you to arrange a mutually convenient date and time.
If you are having an office clear out and have items others may find useful, you can advertise them on the University's 'Swap Shop'. Please do this to prevent good quality items ending up in landfill.
SWAP SHOP
The University operates a 'SWAP SHOP' through the Purchasing Services Department; please have a look at this site because another department may be able to use something you no longer need rather than sending it to landfill. If you plan ahead and advertise these items as early as possible, it will give people chance to find them a new home.
General waste bins are located around the University and these are only for items which cannot be recycled. For more information on what can be recycled, see our Recycling pages.
Waste collecitons
General waste bins are located around the University and these are only for items which cannot be recycled. For more information on what can be recycled, please read our 'Recycling' section.

RECYCLING
 |
Batteries
Batteries must not be disposed of in the general waste bins, it is illegal to send 'Batteries' to landfill, please put them in a envelope or box clearly marked as batteries and leave them for the Portering team who will take them to the battery disposal facility. Alternatively you can take the batteries yourself to one of our battery recycling points on campus - please refer to the map for the location of these. |
 |
Cardboard
Cardboard and brown paper can be recycled separately - any pieces of cardboard/cardboard boxes you may have, please stack neatly by the side of your bin (indicating that these are for 'recycling') and a porter will collect and take to the cardboard store for recycling via a different route. |
 |
CDs
CDs should be separated and will be collected by the Porters if you email waste@lists.bath.ac.uk |
| |
|
 |
Clothing
The University has two clothing banks for The Children's Society, located in the north of the campus among the student residences (see map for locations); staff and students are both encouraged to use these clothing banks. |
 |
Electrical Items
It is illegal to dispose of electrical ietms in the general waste, instead these should be separated so that they can be recycled where possible.
Group smaller items such as phone chargers together and contact your Chargehand Porter via this link, informing them of what you need removing.
For larger items or large quantities contact waste@lists.bath.ac.uk direct. |
|
 |
Glass
Mixed glass can be recycled at various locations around the University (see map for locations). Although there often aren't individual bins located in staff kitchens for glass, we encourage you to separate any glass and take it to one of the recycling bins. |
 |
Ink/Printer Cartridges/Toners
The University's Managed Print Contract includes provision for the recycling of old printer cartridges/toners. When delivering a new cartridge, the Print Unit will remove the old one.
If your department is still using a printer not included within the centrally managed contract, our waste contractors are able to recycle the majority of these products.
Place spent cartridges by the bins, preferably in their original packaging, for the Portering team to remove when they collect the general waste.
Please do not dispose of cartridges in the general waste. |
 |
Metals
Food and drinks cans, can be recycled with plastics around the University campus.
Aluminium and steel are some of the most valuable resources which are easily recyclable at the University of Bath. Did you know? Recycling aluminium requires only 5% of the energy it takes to make new aluminium and produces only 5% of the CO2 emissions.
If you have any scrap metal, this can be disposed of through your Chargehand Porter. |
 |
Plastics
Plastics can be recycled in the same bin as tin cans across the campus.
Did you know? Recycling just one plastic bottle saves enough energy to power a 60w light bulb for six hours. |
 |
Low energy light bulbs
It is illegal to dispose of light bulbs in the general waste. If you need a light bulb changing in your office, inform the Estates department by using the 'Green Button'. |
 |
Paper
Within office areas recycling bins are provided for collecting paper, this waste paper is diverted away from landfill and is sent to UK paper mills for processing and reuse. Please note that staples don't need to be removed before putting in recycling bin.
Please remember contamination of paper can cause our contractor to reject the paper and divert to landfill, which is a huge waste of a valuable resource. |
