Portering servicesThe University of Bath is actively encouraging recycling and some of you may have noticed changes occurring to the way waste is collected at the University, and others will notice the changes over the coming weeks. Some recent changes affect the way Estates manage the various waste streams. Please refer to the Estates home page http://www.bath.ac.uk/estates/index.shtml for a fuller explanation of these changes; the main change that affects you is the removal of your desk waste bin and the way Estates ask you to manage your office generated waste. Within office areas Estates provide boxes for collecting recyclable paper, this waste paper is diverted away from landfill and is sent to UK paper mills for processing and reuse. The collecting boxes provided are emptied by the Portering team and bulked for collection by our waste contractor. Please remember contamination of paper can cause our contractor to reject the paper and divert to landfill, this causes frustration in the management of the waste and additional costs to the University of Bath . To this end we encourage recyclable paper to be separated from general waste, the recycling collection boxes are labelled as a reminder of the materials which can be deposited in these boxes as illustrated below
There is no need to remove staples, paper clips and treasury tags from papers. All metal and plastic spine bindings and plastic covers and inserts must be separated. There is a facility for the removal of confidential waste; for details, please follow this http://www.bath.ac.uk/internal/rm/waste.htm Collection facilities are provided in buildings and around the campus for the collection of plastic bottles and drink cans, please do not put these in general waste bins. Card and cardboard boxes should be separated from general waste and neatly stored, preferably flattered, by the general waste bins, this will be collected by the Portering team and taken to the baling facility for compacting. Baled cardboard is collected by our waste contractor who sends the majority to UK board mills for reprocessing and reuse. Batteries must not be disposed of in the general waste bins, it is no longer permissible to send batteries to landfill, put them in a envelope or box clearly marked as batteries and leave them for the Portering team who will take them to the battery disposal facility. All other general waste from offices must be taken to the general waste bins in kitchens and drink making facility areas where general waste bins are provided.
