Institution
of Mechanical Engineers Annual General Meeting and Talk The London Eye - Allan Mann |
||
|
At 135m high, the London Eye is the world's largest observation wheel and is the fourth tallest structure in London. The engineering of the wheel includes many novel features such as the design of the rim, main spindle and capsules; the ride control systems and the treatment of wind dynamics. Dr
Allan Mann will give an illustrated presentation on the project
as a whole, describing the engineering aspects of the wheel's design
and construction: the mechanical drive and electrical systems; instrumentation;
and how safety was achieved. Dr
Mann is a Divisional Director at Babtie Allott & Lomax where
he specialises in structural work, mainly for the defence and nuclear
industries, but he also works extensively with the company section which
deals with all kinds of fairground rides and roller coasters . Under
UK regulations, the London Eye is classified as a 'ride'. Dyrham
Park is just off the A46, two miles south of M4 Junction 18 For further information please contact Roger Dilley
