Inaugural lecture: Building with the ground
Professor Andrew Heath will give his inaugural lecture on how we can develop more sustainable construction materials using the ground.
The ground is key for the design and construction of all buildings. When faced with a particular site, it is invariably easier and more sustainable to adapt the building to the site conditions, rather than forcing a particular building to the site. Consideration of the ground conditions should come before any decision of building form or even whether to build in a particular location. In addition, almost all common building materials are sourced from the ground and using this resource effectively and sustainably will allow us to meet future development needs. This talk will focus on how unsuitable developments on particular sites can increase costs and impacts, and how we can develop more sustainable construction materials using the ground.
