FLC French GPFrench is the most widely taught language in schools in the UK and the UK’s second most visited country in Europe, both of which contribute to making French a popular language choice.

Our course provides classes from Complete Beginner through to Advanced.

Based on a communicative approach to learning, you will learn practical language that you will be able to use in every day conversations. In addition, you will develop cultural awareness of the French speaking world. A world of 220 million native speakers, from five continents and the official language in a number of international organisation, such as the United Nations, the European Union, the Council of Europe, UNESCO, NATO, the International Olympic Committee and the International Red Cross.

Choosing the correct language level

Use the information below to choose the correct language level for you.

Complete Beginner 

This level has been designed for you if you have never studied French before.

This level will give you a basic introduction to the language.

Elementary

This level has been designed for you if you already know the basics of French or if you know a bit more, but you have not practised French for a long period of time.You can also join this class if you have attended stage 1A and 1B in the past, but do not feel yet ready to join the Lower Intermediate class. 

You should join this level if you already can:

  • understand some familiar and daily expressions
  • identify yourself and talk about your nationality, your age, your place of residence
  • participate in an ordinary interaction, at least partially, by means of simple statements (centered on one or two words).

Lower Intermediate 

This level has been designed for you if you can already use French to speak about familiar topics.

You should join this level if you can:

  • understand basic instructions
  • take part in a basic factual conversation on a predictable topic
  • understand basic written notices
  • complete basic forms, and write notes including times, dates and places.

Intermediate

This level has been designed for you if you are already able to interact confidently in French in common social situations, like in a shop, in a restaurant or with friends.

You should join this level if you already can:

  • express simple opinions or requirements in a familiar context
  • understand straightforward written text information on familiar matters
  • write short simple texts related to personal information.

Upper intermediate

This level has been designed for you if you are already able to deal with most situations likely to arise while travelling in a French speaking country.

You should choose this level if you already can:

  • express opinions or offer advice within a known area
  • understand instructions or public announcements
  • understand written text about a familiar topic.

Advanced

This level has been designed for you if you are proficient in French. You will be able to practise French on a weekly basis by engaging in guided group conversations. The classes mainly focus on speaking and listening skills.

This is your level if you can:

  • express yourself fluently
  • understand with ease spoken or written French
  • use the language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes.
