Document checking for international undergraduate and postgraduate students

If you have an international fee status, you must attend a document checking session to complete your registration.

Why you must have your documents checked

If you have been assessed as having an Overseas fee status, you must show us documents that prove you can study in the UK. If you're a postgraduate student, you may also have to show us documents proving your qualifications.

You have not completed registration until you have attended a document checking session.

If you have been assessed as having a Home or EU fee status, you should follow the separate process.

Upload copies of your documents before travelling

Before you come to the UK, you should upload scans of these documents to Application Tracker:

  • the 30-day travel vignette in your passport
  • the letter confirming you have been granted a Tier 4 visa

When you have uploaded your documents, we will contact you about beginning the registration process online. This means it will be quicker to complete document checking when you arrive at the University.

If your fee status is Overseas but you are travelling on something other than a Tier 4 visa (like a UK or EU passport), we will contact you to tell you which documents to upload.

Come to a document checking session

You must come to document checking to complete your University registration.

You can attend document checking in the Student Immigration Service in Wessex House, room 8.29.

Sessions are held from Monday to Friday. You can come any time between:

  • 10:00 and 12:00
  • 14:00 and 16:00

If you do not go to a document checking session as early as possible, you could slow down the registration process and may not be able to start studying your course on time.

If you miss these sessions, you should contact the Student Immigration Service.

Collecting your biometric residence permit (BRP)

When you arrive in the UK, you must collect your biometric residence permit (BRP). You will have chosen where to pick it up from when you applied for it.

If you chose not to pick it up from the University, you can find out how to collect your BRP on

If you have chosen to collect your BRP from the University, you will get it at a document checking session.

What to bring to a document checking session

You must bring your:

  • passport
  • BRP (if you chose not to collect it from the University)

You must also bring any original qualifications that were part of your offer, like:

  • degree certificates (and original translations if not in English)
  • transcripts (and original translations if not in English)
  • English language certificate, if English is not your first language

If you're applying for an undergraduate course, log in to the undergraduate Application Tracker to get a list of documents you need to bring.

If you're applying for a postgraduate course, log into the postgraduate Application Tracker for details of the documents we need to see.

What to do if UKVI has your documents

If UKVI is still processing your visa application and has your passport, visa and qualifications documents, you must still come to a document checking session.

You must bring evidence of your application to the session. This could be:

  • a letter from UKVI confirming they have received your application
  • a letter from UKVI asking you to make an appointment to give your biometric data
  • confirmation from the Student Immigration Service that they have checked your visa application and helped you send it

You cannot complete registration until you have a visa for the University of Bath.

If you have a visa for another institution, you must apply to UKVI for a visa for the University of Bath before you can register.
