Course Levels

We offer two levels in Japanese, Complete Beginner and Lower Intermediate.

Beginner

You should enrol on this course if you have a basic level of Japanese. This level is not suitable for those who have never studied Japanese before. If you are a complete beginner, contact us.

At the end of this course, you will:

  • have had an introduction to the language (pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar)

  • be confident in talking about every day topics, such as: self-introduction, family, useful phrases (greetings, when shopping and at a restaurant), daily routine and holiday

  • start reading and writing using the Japanese alphabets (Hiragana and Katakana)

  • have learnt about the culture of Japan

Lower intermediate

You should enrol on this course if you have completed the Beginners' level with us. Alternatively, you can join this course if you have a GCSE or are at A1 level in the CEFR.

At the end of this course, you will be able:

  • to speak about a variety of subjects within your field of interest

  • to describe experiences and events and express thoughts and opinions

  • to understand the main points of clear standard speech on familiar matters, provided speech is clearly articulated

  • to read notes and messages using Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji

  • to write simple texts using Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji

Summer Term

New students are welcome at the beginning of each term, so you can join a course even if you have not studied with us before.

Independent Language Learning

Our students can access independent language learning resources including films, books, and online resources to help you build your knowledge and language skills from the Language Learning Zone.
