Course Levels

We offer three levels in Mandarin Chinese, from Complete Beginner to Intermediate.

Complete Beginner (Part 1)

You should enrol on this course if you have never studied Mandarin Chinese before.

At the end of this course, you will:

  • have learnt about pronunciation, some basic vocabulary and some basic grammar

  • be confident in talking about every day topics, such as: personal introductions, family, likes and dislikes

  • have learnt pinyin and a limited number of Chinese characters

  • have learnt about Chinese culture

Lower intermediate

You should enrol on this course if you have completed the Beginners level with us. Alternatively, you can join this course if you have a GCSE or are at A1 level in the CEFR.

At the end of this course, you will be able:

  • to express opinions and engage in conversation on a number of familiar topics

  • to understand simple written texts on familiar matters

  • to write short texts related to familiar topics, using Chinese characters

Intermediate

You should enrol on this course if you have completed the Lower Intermediate level with us. Alternatively, you can join this course if you have an AS level or are at A2 level in the CEFR.

At the end of this course, you will be able:

  • to express opinions and engage in spoken activities related to a wide range of topics

  • to understand the gist and most details during a conversation on topics of personal and general interest

  • to understand written text related to familiar topics

  • to write relatively short text on familiar topics using characters

Independent learning

University students or staff members can access independent language learning resources including films, books, and online resources to help you build your knowledge and language skills from the Language Learning Zone.
