“I cared for my husband for ten years as he suffered from dementia. I have attended local meetings for the past several years regarding consultation for the Department of Health’s Dementia Strategy.
I first heard about the Carers’ Panel through attending the Carers’ Centre at Radstock. I now teach voluntarily at a local care home for four days a week and always ask the manager for any tips or hints to bring to this panel.
I have contributed to research projects through caring and understanding the needs of dementia.
I recently attended a research panel at the University of Bath where researchers presented a project entitled Active Support in the Kitchen (ASK). The aim of the project was to support daily activity in the kitchen and use this as a means to retain social interaction and facilitate healthy living. I supported this project by giving opinions of ‘hands on’ caring and suggesting new inventions for the kitchen.
There are great benefits to being involved in the Carers’ Panel; I now volunteer at a care home and am very aware of the needs and respond as needed.
I take all creative ideas to heart, knowing one day I shall use and appreciate them.”
