Department hosts training event for international study into primary school children's health

12 August 2011

Researchers from the Department for Health hosted a training event on 10-12 August for internationally leading academics from Canada, Kenya, Portugal, and the United States.

The training event was part of a large multi-national study encompassing data from 12 counties spanning five major regions of the world (Eurasia & Africa, Europe, Latin America, North America, and the Pacific).

The aim of the work was to investigate the influence of behavioural settings and physical, social and policy environments on a number of health-related outcomes (for example, objectively assessed physical activity, direct assessment of dietary patterns, and adiposity status).

As part of the larger study, Bath is serving as the UK centre for this work with the coordinating centre being Pennington Biomedical Research, Louisiana.

The overall project is led by internationally leading experts in the area of physical activity and health, Professors Peter Katzmarzyk and Timothy Church.

Dr Martyn Standage who is the Principal Investigator for the UK site said; “My colleagues and I are delighted that Bath was selected to be the national site for what is the first study to examine such relationships across major regions of the world.”

Dr Standage went on to explain; “it is also a wonderful opportunity for primary schools and children in the BANES area to be involved in such an exciting international study.”
