Clinical Director takes on Head Sports Doctor role at London 2012
01 December 2011
Dr Stuart Miller, Clinical Director of the MSc Sport & Exercise Medicine at the University of Bath, has been appointed as the Head Sports Doctor for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Dr Miller was the Chief Medical Officer for ParalympicsGB during the preparation for the 2008 Paralympics and for the past four years has been the National lead for Paralympic Sport within the English Institute of Sport. He now takes on the additional role as Head Sports Doctor for the London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG), for both the Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games.
Dr Miller will be working full time in the role from July to September 2012. He commented, “When I started the Bath sports medicine course many years ago I had an ambition to be a doctor involved in one of the 'big games'. To have been asked to do this role is a real honour and a fascinating challenge that I am very much looking forward to.”
Dr Miller has a long history of association with the University's Sport & Exercise Medicine MSc programme and was one of the first students to graduate from the course. In 2008 he became the first formally recognised specialist in Sport & Exercise Medicine in the UK.
Along with the distance-learning MSc Sport & Exercise Medicine (for doctors), the University also runs the MSc Sports Physiotherapy (for physiotherapists) both designed specifically for professionals wishing to specialise in elite sports and exercise medicine. A number of tutors, students and alumni, will also be volunteering at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
