Tobacco Research embraces social media

23 August 2012

The University of Bath’s Tobacco Control Research Group has opened up its research to new audiences using social media.

The Group has recently launched a blog and twitter account to reach a range of people – from academics and practitioners, to policy makers and the public. Through daily tweets, our followers can now receive regular updates on tobacco news, while the blog provides more in depth articles on our latest tobacco research.

Tobacco is currently in the public eye with Australia’s move to ban branded cigarette packs by this coming December and also the UK Government’s recent consultation on plain packaging. We hope our improved communication will come at an excellent time to inform people of not only the health issues surrounding tobacco, but also how government policy is formed and the role of corporations in influencing both public policy and behaviour.

This initiative has been developed by the University’s Research Ambassador for Policy Sciences. This is one of many activities being developed to ensure our research is more widely communicated to decision makers and also the people who influence them such as the public.
