PhD student Gareth Roberts recently accompanied the UK Invictus Games team out to Orlando for the 2016 Invictus Games. He visited as part of his research which explores the experiences of veterans at the Invictus Games and the how the process of being involved in the games helps in their rehabilitation.

In his support capacity, Gareth provided assistance wherever he was needed and in whatever form it was needed. His willingness and hard work earnt him a place among the team at both the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as developing strong bonds with many of the UK team athletes.

Commenting on the experience Gareth said: ‘The Invictus Games are such an inspiring event and I felt truly honoured to be able to play my part and support the UK team. Although primarily there for my research, I felt a part of the UK team and I am genuinely delighted for all those who competed and proved to themselves, as well as others, that there is most certainly life beyond injury.’

The Invictus Games UK team trials were held at the University of Bath in January.

Gareth will continue to conduct his research with Help for Heroes Sports Recovery and is hoping to be involved in some capacity with the Invictus Games 2017 in Toronto, Canada.
