Wellbeing
Why do we do research in this area?

According to the World Health Organization health is “a state of complete physical, mental, and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”.
Physical activity has long been associated with promoting advances in wellbeing, and can promote positive mental health states and alleviate negative mood states. Research that extends our knowledge of the extent to which physical activity can promote wellbeing, and the conditions in which this effect can be maximised is important for informing future research and practice.
What do we do?
Our staff and research students in Sport, Health and Exercise Science undertake research projects investigating the association between physical activity and wellbeing at different stages in life, from childhood to old age.
We examine how the environment, in which physical activity occurs, influences the outcome on wellbeing for better or worse, and the mechanisms by which physical activity promotes wellbeing.
This research has helped inform clinicians, individuals, and organisations, such as schools and the military, as to how best to protect and enhance wellbeing, while encouraging greater participation and performance.
