Research interests

  • Understanding and addressing the ways the commercial sector impacts on health, including via its influence on science and policy, and using such knowledge to identify appropriate public health and governance interventions. I have been at the forefront of work in this area in tobacco control which has led to significant impacts at national (UK and beyond) European and global levels and am increasingly applying this research to other areas including alcohol and food.
  • Policy evaluation & the evaluation of complex interventions on health and health inequalities. This includes evaluation of the impacts of macroeconomic change on health and of public health policies or interventions. Recent work includes evaluation of the impact of smokefree public places on health(I led the Department of Health funded evaluation) and an NIHR funded evaluation of tobacco tax policies and tobacco industry pricing.
  • Evidence based approaches to public health.
