Profile
Gary is a corporate criminologist with broad research interests in the relationship between business and society with a particular focus on the impact of business political activity over health policy and financial regulation. He is currently working on a number of projects exploring transnational tobacco companies’ influence on health policy and is particularly interested in the industry’s innovation in policy influence. His work covers the tobacco industry’s role in shaping the regulatory architecture of the European Union and European member states, their use of corporate social responsibility practices to influence policy and their success in expanding the conflict relating to tobacco control by forging links with neoliberal think tanks and campaign groups. He is also working with other colleagues in the Tobacco Control Research Group to develop a model of tobacco company political activity which can be used to monitor policy influence by both tobacco companies and companies operating in other industrial sectors whose activities are potentially harmful to health.
Gary maintains an on-going interest in the politics of serious fraud control and financial regulation and continues to undertake empirically-based, policy relevant research into the non-criminalisation of large financial corporations. He is particularly interested in the normalisation of non-criminalisation through the formal rules, working practices and organisational cultures of regulatory institutions in the UK.
Gary has also undertaken research on the enforcement of occupational health and safety in the UK and internationally, and has been commissioned to undertake research for government bodies and NGOs.
