Francesco Guardi (1712-1793) Coast Scene
Oil on canvas, 48.3 x 71.1 cm
Purchased by the Holburne Society, 1933. A318

Guardi was born in Venice and became a pupil of Canaletto. He began by painting set scenes of the Grand Canal with its churches, palaces and busy boats, in a style similar to his master, but soon preferred to paint imaginative scenes of the more anonymous districts of the Venetian lagoon. Where scenes of the Grand Canal by Canaletto were popular with 18 th-century gentlemen visiting Venice on their Grand Tour, Guardi’s atmospheric, imaginary scenes appealed to Venetian clients. In the 19 th and 20 th century their appeal to British collectors increased, who saw images such as this as elegiac records of the crumbling glory of Venice.
