Congratulations Everyone!
Welcome to the April edition of Accommodation & Hospitality Campus Life Newsletter.
We’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who helped organise Fairtrade Fortnight and took
part in the celebrations on campus.
The student groups People & Planet, Backstage Society, Gravity Vomit, Wine Society, Vegetarian Society and Debate Society, who helped to stage and host the event along with local businesses Coral Quay, Kerala Crafts and the Little Theatre.
The Fairtrade Foundation sponsored Philemon Allen as guest speaker and funded the dazzling
night time projection of the Fairtrade logo onto the main parade. The Students' Union donated
fantastic Fairtrade prizes and the ICIA judged the winning flags.
The overwhelming contribution from everyone who took part helped make a personal and local
connection to Fairtrade that demonstrates our support of the campaign.
Student Cooking TV filmed vox pops on campus to find out what you thought about Fairtrade and
created a short film. The film includes a reflection on the working conditions for people in
developing countries. Visit
studentcooking.tv/bath to view.
The Guinness World Record attempt by Fairtrade Foundation for the longest and fairest string
of Fairtrade cotton bunting flags caught the imagination of people on campus.
Our combined efforts created 39 meters of bunting that will then be sewn together to make a 40
mile long statement about the importance of fair trade and trade justice for the cotton farmers of
West Africa.
A recent Fairtrade Foundation report,
The
Great Cotton Stitch-Up (www.fairtrade.org.uk/cotton) revealed that a $31
billion wall of subsidies paid by the United States and the EU locks West Africa into
poverty.
Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair
terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world.
