Induction

All new staff need to be introduced to the University, to the department in which they work, and to their job.

Joining a new organisation can be interesting and challenging. It may take time you as a new member of staff to settle in, find your way around and become effective in your role. This webpage aims to provide new staff and supervisors with links and information to help them overcome 'the induction crisis'.

Orientation in the University

The 'Introduction to the University of Bath is a regular half-day event open to all new staff. With an opening welcome and question and answer session by a member of the senior management team, it aims to help you understand what the University is here to do, how it aims to do it, and the values we aspire to.

There are interactive sessions which provide key information and enable you to make contacts, use the facilities and the services of the University rapidly and effectively and to work safely and securely.  A buffet lunch is provided.

Once you have started and been given an email address, you will be sent an invitation to the next orientation event. If you do not receive this invitation please contact Staff Development.

For staff who work non-standard shift patterns, their Departments will organise a tailored programme.

In addition to the induction event, all staff are strongly encouraged to familiarise themselves with further induction guidance and materials to help them get to know the departments, facilities and services that make up the University of Bath.

Induction to the Department

The Induction Process is an important way of ensuring that both you and the Department derive real benefit from your appointment. The aim is to enable you to perform effectively as soon as possible.

  1. Induction timeline : An illustration of Good Practice when inducting new staff.
  2. Induction checklist: to help supervisors/managers from day one to introduce their staff to the department and job. This generic checklist can be adapted by units/departments for their own use. It includes many of the things you will need to know and also acts as a reminder to colleagues of what should happen and be covered.
  3. Guidance for managers : Induction Guidance for Managers provides guidance for Heads of Departments (Academic and Service) and supervisors/managers who need to put in place the processes necessary to ensure staff effectively settle into the University and their new jobs.
  4. Guidance for new staff : Induction Guidance for New Staff provides guidance for newly recruited staff on what to expect in terms of their induction and where to go for advice and information.
