Fieldwork

Field work encompasses a wide range of activities, from taught undergraduate field trips to well-known UK locations to research workers sampling in the depths of the rain forest. Working at locations away from the campus introduces potentially unfamiliar hazards. Personal security and cultural unfamiliarity should be considered in addition to the hazards posed by the activity itself, especially where work is undertaken outside of the UK. Particular consideration should be given to situations where there could be an element of lone working.

The following six health and safety factors apply to all field work and must be considered in the risk assessment and review process:

  • Work/ activities

  • Travel and transportation

  • Location and/ or region

  • General /environmental health

  • The individual

  • Contingency planning, emergency provision and limitations of insurance
