Placements

Over 60% of University of Bath students undertake a placement or study year abroad with a wide range of employment or study opportunities being taken up. The University, the student, and the employer/host institution all have a role to play in ensuring the health and safety of the student.

Guidance has been developed for the placement of Higher Education students through a joint project between UCEA (University & Colleges Employers Association), USHA (University Safety & Health Association) and HEOPS (Heigher Education Occupational Physicians.  It recommends that Higher Education Institutions adopt some simple principles:

  •  Clarify roles and responsibilities of each party.

  • Prepare the student so that they understand the risks and thus able to make informed judgements.

  • Develop suitable processes to enable problems to be reported and resolved prior to, during the course of, and at the conclusion of the placement.

  • Put in place contingency plans in case there are exceptional circumstances.

  • All staff involved in handling student placements receive suitable guidance and training so that they understand the University's policies and the arrangements that they must follow.

The guidance strongly supports a risk management approach which allows a light touch for low risk placements and much tighter controls for placements which pose a greater risk.  Work placements and study abroad programmes must therefore be risk assessed in the same way as any other work activity:

  • Work activities: Expectations of tasks, performance management, reporting concerns

  • Travel: Accessing the location, quality and frequency of local transport

  • Location/region: Remoteness

  • Environment: Local conditions, access to medical support, working conditions and arrangements

  • The individual: Wellbeing (mental and physical), previous experience

  • Contingency planning: Emergency provision, communication, limitations of insurance
